ARTIST STATEMENT

During the last one hundred years, creative thinking has been interwoven with technological advances like no other time in history. This relationship has been an inspiration to myself as an artist and as a person, and in some respects, reflects how contemporary citizens now view art and determine what art really is. My objective as an artist is more than just making artwork and more than just making objects that look interesting. My sculpture is an investigation into materials and processes, and how they work with each other in the realm of construction, constructivism, aesthetics, industry, and ultimately how they relate to the human figure and my own personal history. I have had a life-long interest in combining different objects, colors, images, textures, and shapes and my experiences as a visual artist allow me to gain invaluable insight into how certain materials work with each other in aesthetic and structural harmony. My own experiences as a builder, carpenter, welder, and artist have given me a unique perspective on the importance of the structural qualities of different metals, woods, stones, and concrete and how the necessity of function and structure can be a limitless conceptual and aesthetic venue. I am also discovering that while the investigation of materials is crucial to what I do, the history of these materials and the processes that make, cultivate, or employ them is just as significant. The future of the art world will be filled with amazing new materials, technology, and processes, and I look forward to exploring them as they become available, but re-investigating contemporary and traditional building materials and how they have been used and are being used, will help my work to navigate through the on-going experiment that is present-day artistic expression.
